
What Is a Mortise Lock and Why Does It Fail?
A mortise lock is a locking mechanism housed inside a rectangular pocket — the mortise — that is routed directly into the edge of a door. Unlike a cylindrical lock set, which mounts through a simple bored hole, a mortise lock set is a self-contained cartridge containing the latch bolt, deadbolt, strike mechanism, and sometimes a privacy turn, all in one steel case.
